99.9% of modern hip-hop IS shit! It's formulaic at best, using the same tired old beats and thugged out lyrical references. Those you mention don't mean shit to me, refer them to REAL hip hop: BDP, KRS, EPMD, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Biz, Stetsasonic, Marley Marl, Schoolly D, Beasties, De La, Pharcyde, ATCQ, Gangstarr, Hieroglyphics, UMCs, Special Ed, KMD, Black Star, Madlib.
To be honest for my sins I shall spend next week opening my mind to the further boundaries if contemporary hip hop, so if anyone has any recommendations then please let us know.

there is good contemparary hip hop, just need to dig about in the underground as always, easier these days though with the web!
